Random Ringing In Right Ear - It is All in Your Head
If you suffer from ringing in the ear (the technical term is Tinnitus), the sound that you are "hearing" is actually in your head and not from your external surroundings. There is still so much unknown as to how the brain functions.
When your ear functions normally, the sounds that you hear are actually sound waves that gets picked up by your ears. There are fine hair "receptacles" in the ear that picks up these sound waves and translates them into electrical signals which gets sent down to your brain. The brain then interprets these signals into sound.
Now when these fine hair "receptacles" are damaged such as through constant exposure to loud noises (one of the major causes of tinnitus), they may send random electrical signals to the brain. The brain, not knowing any better, translates these electrical signals into hissing, popping, humming, whooshing and other strange noises which people report as ringing in the ear.
These may appear in one ear, both ears, and some people even report hearing the noises right in the middle of the head. So how do you treat this ringing in the ear?
Some physicians suggest using methods ranging from TRT (Tinnitus Retraining Therapy) to even hypnotherapy. These methods focus on "retraining" the brain to mask out/defocus the tinnitus noise. The thinking behind this is that the brain can adapt to various environments. For example, if you live near an airport or train tracks, you will initially be bothered by the airplanes or trains passing by. But as time goes by, your brain will start to filter out those noises so that eventually you will no longer be aware of these noises.
