How to Bury Wires or Cables Under a Carpet
Wires and cables all around in your room gives a messy look. Exposed wires and cables are also very dangerous. Wires and cables going here and there can be risky in a way that you can trip on them or yank them or might have step on them, this can not only raise the potential risks for you but wires can also receive damage in this case. In order to ensure your safety and to prevent any damage to your wires, keep your wires out of the way. The best way to hide your wires and cables is to bury them under the carpet.
Required Items
You need following items to perform this duty:
- Tape measure
- Pliers
- Utility knife
- Fish sticks
- Electrical tape
Steps
1. The first thing you have to select the place where you want to adjust the components. Also find out which way you want wires to run. Measure the distance and get a proper length wire.
2. Next step is to make the carpet loose from its tack strips; this will allow an easy passage to wires. Pull the edge of the carpet up with pliers to let it get free from tack strips. Remember not to pull large part of carpet.
3. Now you need fish stick, electrical tape and a utility knife. Using utility knife cut a small piece of tape. Now keep wire on the end of the fish stick and apply tape onto them. To adjust the length of the fish stick, you can screw one or two more fish sticks together.
4. Now put the fish stick along with wire under the carpet and push it in the way from where you want the wire to come out. You can move and change the direction of the fish stick as required. Do it gently. Never show any urgency while pushing the fish stick.
5. Now move to other end of the carpet and pull the edge of the carpet up with pliers.
6. After removing the edge of the carpet, hold the fish stick end with pliers and pull it towards yourself. Pull it out from under the carpet completely.
7. Once the wire and fish stick is out from other end, take the tape off holding the wire and fish stick together.
8. Plug the wire with the component. Replace the carpet to its place properly. You are done with your task.
Precautions
- Metal coat hangers are much better option than fish sticks. If they are available use them instead of fish sticks. It is better to use flat cables under the carpet instead of standard ones. Flat cables adjust easily under the carpet.
- Never use high voltage cables or wires under the carpet. Using high voltage cables or wires under the carpet increases the possibility of catching fire risk.
- Utility knife is harmful, if used casually, it has very sharp blade so take extra care while using it.
